What cookies are
Cookies are small text files stored on your device that help a site remember information about your visit. They are widely used to make websites work, to make them work more smoothly, and to give site owners information about how the site is used.
Why we use cookies
We use cookies to keep the site working, to understand which guides readers find useful, and to credit referrals when you follow a link to one of the platforms we review. We do not sell your personal information. You can read more in our Privacy Policy.
Cookies we use
Essential
Used for core site functionality, such as remembering that you've dismissed a notice. The site won't work properly without these.
Analytics
Help us understand which guides are read and how visitors move through the site, so we can improve it. We use Google Analytics for this. These don't identify you personally.
Affiliate tracking
Set by a platform's own site when you click an affiliate link from one of our guides, so that platform can credit the referral. These are controlled by the platform, not by us.
Cookies at a glance
| Type | What it does | Set by | Can you block it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Keeps core features working, such as remembering a dismissed notice | This site | Yes, in your browser, but parts of the site may stop working |
| Analytics | Shows which guides are read and how visitors move through the site | Google Analytics | Yes, in your browser settings or with Google's opt-out browser add-on |
| Affiliate tracking | Lets a platform credit a referral from one of our guides | The platform's own site | Yes, in your browser settings |
How long cookies last
Some cookies are deleted when you close your browser. These are called session cookies. Others stay on your device for a set period, or until you delete them. These are called persistent cookies. How long a cookie lasts is set by whoever places it, so the lifespan of analytics and affiliate cookies depends on the provider.
Third-party cookies and affiliate links
When you click an affiliate link, you leave our site. Any cookies set on the platform's site are governed by that platform's own cookie and privacy policies, so it's worth reading them before you sign up.
Managing cookies
Most browsers let you block or delete cookies in their settings. Blocking essential cookies may affect how parts of the site work.
- Use your browser settings to block all cookies, or only third-party cookies
- Delete existing cookies at any time from the same settings page
- Use Google's opt-out browser add-on if you only want to stop analytics tracking
Deleting or blocking cookies applies only to the device and browser you are using, so you'll need to repeat it on any others.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time, for example if we add a new tool or change how the site works. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
